Work with us
We hire farm hands, deer handlers, fence crews and venison staff who like early mornings, hard weather and steady work with animals.

We occasionally look for new hands to join our herds and venison teams. Typical roles include farm hands for day-to-day animal and camp care, handlers skilled in low-stress movement of deer, fence and camp maintenance crews, cold-chain and provenance support at our Karoo Edge cold room, farm visit guides and help at seasonal show stands.
Most roles are based at Karoo Edge Farm, but we also need team members at our Midlands, Overberg, Lowveld and Polokwane visit points during busy periods or show days. Work can be full-time, seasonal or on a short-term contract, depending on our needs and your skills.
Our days start early, sometimes before sunrise, especially in summer when herding or loading animals before it gets hot. Work is mostly outdoors, whatever the Karoo wind, Highveld frost or Midlands mist brings. Some roles involve quiet hours on a stoep with records, others mean bakkie rides between camps, or moving quietly among deer with a herdsman’s patience.
You’ll handle feed, check water points, fix fences, wash down cold rooms, and help with animal records. At times, you’ll help with education days or load-out at dawn for a show. Some days are long, especially in the November and December calving weeks and the July to September harvest weeks.
We do not expect new team members to arrive with deer farm experience. Everyone learns our approach to low-stress herd handling, keeping good records, checking for signs of disease or stress, and our standards for biosecurity, FMD control rules and safe food handling. Experienced hands mentor new arrivals, and you’ll work alongside the team on herd tasks from the start.
Training takes place on the job, with extra time set aside for safety around animals, use of tools and equipment, and understanding the legal requirements for deer in South Africa. We also provide practical training in safe working during power cuts, especially for crucial systems like cold rooms and electric fences.
If you are ready for early mornings, tough weather and the steady work that comes with raising deer and producing Karoo venison, send your CV and the kind of work that interests you through our contact form. Tell us your location, any farming or animal experience, and when you can start. We reply to all applications, but only hire when a post is open.
