Stories from veld and venison

Life with the herds

Stories from veld and venison

Our crews check the Karoo Edge, Midlands and Stellenbosch camps every day, mostly on foot. This year the main concerns were El Niño water checks, the new FMD movement controls and fence-line weaning.

Shifting weather and our deer camps

Camp checks change with the season at Karoo Edge and in the Midlands. When an El Niño summer is forecast, we walk each camp more often, checking water troughs and fencing, watching the veld for early signs of stress. Our fallow, red, chital and sika herds need adaptable management, from extra shade in the heat to adjusting grazing blocks when the veld thins. We use the quieter hours around sunrise for low-stress checks, always moving calmly. Crews note any animal standing apart, off its feed or limping, and report it the same day. As always, our permit and movement records are kept up to date, especially with the new FMD controls from July. Most of these checks are done on foot.

From abattoir to chef and back to the veld

Each venison lot is recorded from camp to the partner abattoir to the Karoo Edge cold room, and deer are loaded only when the group is calm. Abattoir days mean early starts with the stock trailer, a calm drive and close attention to timing and paperwork. Our venison provenance manager keeps the named lots straight for every chef and farm shop, and power cuts mean a daily check of the generator and backup batteries for the cold room and electric fences. Education days with students and stud sales to other farms also run through the year. Stud sales are held at Karoo Edge, and education days at the Stellenbosch barn.
