Raising, handling and caring for deer
Herd numbers in each camp are set from a walk of its veld and water points. Camps are set for the forage on hand and shade for every animal, with careful fencing as the law and the deer require. We use pasture rotation and rest, adjusting to what the season brings and what the grass tells us. El Niño years call for extra attention to water points and drought buffers, so every herd has backup feeds and access to cool shade through the hot months.
Low-stress handling is non-negotiable. Every move, from camp walk-ins to stud sales or loading for abattoir harvest, is planned with calm, steady routines and as little crowding as possible. Veterinary checks are routine, with extra protocols for disease control, and we keep up-to-date records on every animal’s history, health and genetics. Camp and fence design is reviewed after each season, so we can fix weak points before they turn into problems.
