Guided agritourism visits let small groups see fallow, axis and sika deer from marked lanes and hides, always by appointment.

Visitors can see fallow, axis and sika deer herds in natural veld camps from safe, marked lanes and hides. All visits are by appointment with practical orientation and staff guidance for the season.
Deer Farming opens its gates for booked visitors who want to see a working South African deer farm. From school students to chefs, conservationists or families, these visits bring you into the veld and show how our fallow, axis and sika herds live in well-fenced camps. The experience is both educational and practical: you’ll see how deer are handled, what they eat, and how veld management shapes a low-stress, healthy life for the animals. There is no petting: these are wild animals, and your safety and theirs comes first.
Farm visits also support our conservation breeding aims and allow people to see first-hand how licensed deer farming works within South African law, with all the care for animal welfare and the environment that’s required. Each visit is guided by a member of our team familiar with the herd and the season, ensuring a safe, meaningful outing.
Each group is kept small, with a guide walking alongside. Depending on the season and the herd, your visit may focus on one of our three main programmes: Axis Woodland for chital (axis deer), Sika Quiet Pasture for sika deer, or Fallow Grove Herd for fallow deer. Each programme highlights distinctive animal behaviour, veld type, and management methods.
On arrival at a designated farm gate, visitors are met by our farm visits coordinator or another of our guides. We start with a safety orientation, then move along marked lanes built for easy walking and clear viewing, keeping a safe distance from the herds. Purpose-built hides allow quiet observation and time for questions, while staff share practical aspects of feeding, welfare, and veld care. All routes avoid sensitive breeding camps and double-check that electric fences and gates are working before each visit. Bookings are confirmed by email and the meeting point will be sent with your confirmation. Visits are hands-on and respectful of the animals, the crew and the guests.
Deer are alert, sometimes skittish animals, so unexpected visitors, loud noises or stray dogs can upset an entire camp and undo weeks of calm. To avoid this, all visitors must book in advance: this lets us prepare the herds, double-check fences and hides, and post signs on approach lanes. Only staff and booked visitors may use these tracks on visit days. We always brief guests on behaviour near wildlife and carry a radio to call for help if needed.
Weather can change quickly in the Karoo or Midlands, bringing berg winds, Highveld storms, or thick morning mist, so we check the forecast and adjust routes for visitor comfort and safety. Sometimes a guest walks too fast or tries to get closer for a photo without realising the stress this can cause the animals. Our guides gently remind everyone to move quietly and keep to the marked lanes. No one is allowed to feed or touch the deer. First aid kits and water are standard equipment and we check all gates are closed before and after each group.
Our visits go ahead year-round, but the experience varies with the season. In early summer you may see young fawns with the Fallow Grove Herd, and in spring chital fawns in the Axis Woodland camps, but we take extra care not to disturb new mothers. Winter visits often mean cool mornings and sharper light, perfect for quiet herd observation. We monitor heat and rainfall when planning outings, especially in El Niño summers, to ensure both animal and visitor welfare.
All visitor areas are checked daily for safe footing, and backup batteries or a generator keep electric fences and water pumps running on visit days. Movement rules for deer under permit mean that all camps stay locked and only the relevant staff member opens gates. Only trained staff lead visits, and our guides update every guest on safety and biosecurity, especially if you’ve been on other farms with livestock. Bookings and queries are handled through our contact form.
