Sika deer for quieter pastures and smaller farms

Sika Quiet Pasture centres on sika deer, a smaller, adaptable species that does well in modest camp sizes and quieter corners of a farm. Our sika herd is rotated between small, well-grassed camps at the Karoo Edge home farm, each designed to make the most of available veld and shade. Sika have a reputation for being less demanding on space compared to red or fallow, and prefer a calm, settled routine. The compact camp setup is well suited to properties along the Overberg hills or smaller holdings in the southern Highveld, especially where boutique lodges or farm table programmes call for a select but manageable deer group.

Day to day with our sika herds

Our team, led by our herd husbandry manager, keeps daily care simple and quiet. Sika are most settled with minimal disturbance and a steady routine, so we keep handling low-stress and limit unnecessary vehicle movement near their camps. Shade and water are checked each morning, with extra attention in summer when berg winds or a dry spell can catch us out. We rotate grazing to keep the pasture healthy and to prevent any single area from being overgrazed. Our veterinary liaison officer keeps in close contact with the local game veterinarians for health checks, and our stud records lead maintains stud and parentage records for any deer that might go into stud sales or a conservation line. Electric fence energisers and water troughs are all backed up with solar or a generator as needed, so a power cut never leaves the camps unguarded.

Who chooses Sika Quiet Pasture and what you get

Boutique lodges, farm hotels, and smaller landowners often choose Sika Quiet Pasture for its gentle camp footprint and easy management. Chefs get neatly graded venison packs suited to an intimate menu, while farmers and lodge owners receive animals with full provenance, genetic and health records. The venison is mild and fine-grained, excellent for smaller, high-end kitchens or farm shops aiming for something different. For those looking to diversify with a manageable species, sika offer a calm presence and good fit with mixed veld and moderate rainfall.

Planning for sika herds and legal requirements

Anyone wishing to keep, buy or move sika deer must hold, or be applying for, the right environmental permit, since sika are listed as Category 2 under NEMBA. Fencing is a legal duty: we use strong mesh with electric outriggers to keep all deer securely on the property named in the permit. For movement of live animals, current national foot-and-mouth disease rules apply, which may include state vet checks and a Veterinary Red Cross permit if you’re near a control area. Before collection or delivery, we make sure both the property and client paperwork is in order, and our veterinary liaison officer will advise on any recent changes to animal health or movement. Because El Niño years can leave camps short of water, we ask all buyers to review their water supply and veld condition before expanding their camp.

  • Category 2 permit required
  • Strong, legal fencing a must
  • Vet checks for live animal moves
  • Plan for dry spells and El Niño
