Our farm story and practices
Deer Farming works from Karoo Edge Farm in the Eastern Cape, where our main fallow deer herd sets the rhythm of the seasons. Our camps are well-fenced and managed under the permits required by the NEMBA Alien and Invasive Species Regulations. We farm fallow, red, chital (axis) and sika deer, all with veterinary oversight and a focus on low-stress handling. Deer are slaughtered humanely at our registered partner abattoir, and venison is moved under Meat Safety Act rules. We also keep detailed genetic, pasture and welfare records, shared with agricultural colleges and industry bodies.
Our team draws on local knowledge of veld, rainfall, and forage cycles. We monitor our herds through dry Karoo springs, Midlands mists and Lowveld heat, adapting whenever a strong El Niño season is forecast. Power backup is in place for our cold rooms and essential fencing. Visits to any of our gates or stands are always by appointment only, in line with biosecurity and animal health protocols.
