Axis deer
Our axis deer live in cool, shaded woodland camps in the misty KZN Midlands, with browse to feed on and lanes for visitor walk-throughs.

Why farmers choose it
Lodges, chefs and farm owners choose Axis Woodland for its mild venison and the calm, showy behaviour of the deer in dappled shade. Well-managed woodland camps create a natural veld feel and keep animals and guests comfortable through the hot months.

Axis deer, or chital, do best in camps with a mix of tree cover, patches of grass and open walking lanes. At our Midlands camp gate, the natural bush and acacia thornveld offer plenty of shade and browse, with enough space under the trees for herds to rest or move. This set-up mimics the native habitat of chital and helps keep their coats in top condition.
We run the Axis Woodland programme mainly for agritourism and lodge settings, where quiet herds and easy visibility matter. Camps are laid out for safe guest walk-throughs, and the deer adapt quickly to visitors who move slowly and keep to the marked lanes. The Midlands mist in winter and thick summer shade keep the herds comfortable all year.
Each Axis camp is planned with rest camps for rotation and natural veld edges, which lets us keep browse and grazing healthy even during dry spells. Water points are spread out to prevent crowding. We make sure there is a mix of browse, acacia, wild olive, and karee, for natural feeding, and keep pasture edges trimmed for fire safety.
Our herd husbandry manager and the camp crew check the herds daily for any sign of stress, lameness or heat, with careful low-stress handling if an animal needs to be moved. Our deer are used to people but still wild, so no hand-feeding. All records, from calving dates to veld condition, are kept by our stud records lead, and our veterinary liaison officer works with local game vets on annual checks and permits.
Axis Woodland is for farm owners, conservation projects, and lodges with well-fenced bush camps and a need for friendly, visible deer that impress guests. Chefs and farm shops value the mild, tender venison, which our venison provenance manager traces from camp to abattoir through the named lot system.
Herds are sold or lent only to permit-holding buyers, with a full pack of origin records, veld notes and vaccination slips. We help with camp layout for walk-throughs, and our team can set up safe visitor routes when needed. Education days are available for farms and schools interested in veld and deer management.
Axis deer are Category 2 under NEMBA, so every keeper must hold or be applying for a permit, and camps must be properly fenced to keep the animals on the listed land. We assist with permit paperwork and layout advice for new buyers. All live animal moves follow foot-and-mouth movement rules, with Veterinary Red Cross paperwork where required.
The Midlands is known for sudden weather shifts. In El Niño years, pasture rotation and drought buffers are essential. We back up the electric fence energisers and water pumps with batteries and a small solar unit for power cuts. Veterinary and record checks are scheduled before all herd moves.
