Axis Woodland
Our axis deer for the Axis Woodland programme are managed for calm temperament, browse efficiency and genetic diversity, with all pedigree records maintained for agritourism and conservation partners.

Our axis deer herd has roots in several long-permitted herds across the Eastern Cape and KZN Midlands, with new bloodlines introduced under strict permit and quarantine rules. The original sires and dams were selected for their ability to thrive in well-shaded woodland camps with leaf litter, mixed browse and natural movement. We never take animals from wild-caught sources. All deer are registered under the right permits for Category 2 species, with each move or sale cleared by the provincial environment department.
Our Midlands gate is the main centre for the Axis Woodland programme, as the mist and tree cover here match the species’ needs. When we bring in new stock or move animals between camps, we always follow foot-and-mouth disease movement controls and maintain strict quarantine where needed.
We select our breeding sires and dams on a balance of temperament, conformation and genetic spread. Calm, people-tolerant deer make the best candidates for camps near visitor lanes or walk-throughs. Our team, led by our herd husbandry manager, spends time observing group behaviour, noting which stags and hinds settle well with visitor presence and handle low-stress moving between browsed lanes.
Growth and body shape matter too. We look for stags with even, well-set antlers and hinds with strong legs and good maternal instinct. To avoid inbreeding, our stud records lead keeps updated stud records and tracks pairings across calving seasons. Sires are rotated out to neighbouring camps after their third year, keeping the lines fresh.
When a buyer or partner takes part in the Axis Woodland programme, we provide a full pedigree pack for each lot, with studbook history, genetic notes and official movement permits. Every animal comes with its microchip or tag ID and health history, ticked off by our veterinary liaison officer in liaison with the game veterinarian.
We only supply live axis deer to buyers who have, or are applying for, the required environmental permit, as the law demands. Alongside paperwork, we offer ongoing advice on woodland camp design, browse selection and stocking density, drawing on our own Midlands and Karoo experience. Buyers can expect practical support on site visits, with our venison provenance manager overseeing cold chain and provenance for any linked venison supply.
