Stud sales

Our stud sales offer pedigree-recorded fallow, red, sika and chital deer with permits, grazing advice and aftercare for buyers.

Stud sales

Our stud sales support other deer farmers with quality genetics, conservation records, and grazing advice. Visits and full pedigree packs are available for committed buyers only, always by appointment.

Stud sales on a South African deer farm serve herd builders

Every buyer leaves with the paperwork in hand. We work with serious farmers, game ranchers and conservation projects aiming to build or diversify their own breeding herds. Every stud deer comes with a full background: parentage, age, performance records and herd health history. Our main herds, fallow, red, sika and chital, are paired with detailed genetic diversity tracking, so the animals you buy have a known and traceable lineage. We only sell live deer to buyers who have the required environment department permits or are actively applying for them, as the law requires for Category 2 species.

How we run pedigree breeding and buyer visits

Our team manages the Stud Breeding Programme, Red Stag Highland line and Conservation Genetics Line from Karoo Edge Farm. When a potential stud buyer makes an appointment, our stud records lead prepares the pedigree packs, including dam and sire records, calving history, health checks and genetic notes. Farm visits are hosted by our farm visits coordinator, who walks buyers through the relevant camps and records, always prioritising biosecurity and animal welfare. We use low-stress handling and observe camp rest between moves to keep both animals and veld healthy. Only named lots selected for stud are available for view, and every visit is tailored to the buyer's interests and permit requirements. Please book before you arrive, as we have quarantine and movement controls to manage under the latest FMD rules.

Common risks and how we reduce them for buyers and animals

Live animal movement comes with legal, health and welfare risks. Power cuts can threaten electric fencing, so every stud camp has battery or solar backup. Permit issues and last-minute FMD movement restrictions can delay collection, so we double-check paperwork and work closely with state veterinarians. Stress during loading or viewing is reduced using quiet handling and shaded kraals. If a selected animal shows signs of lameness or illness before a sale, it is withdrawn and the buyer notified. We keep communication clear and practical, and buyers are briefed on fencing, permit renewal, and post-sale veterinary oversight.

Our checks include:

  • A health and condition check with our veterinary liaison officer
  • Pedigree and tag records matched to each animal
  • Permits and movement papers in order before loading

Annual planning for pedigree sales and stud herd management

Seasonal changes influence everything from veld grass to fawn survival. Calving is monitored for pedigree record-keeping, usually in November and December, and camps are rotated to balance grazing and rest. In El Niño years we watch our forage and water supply closely, using drought buffers planned by our pasture and forage manager. All sales and visits are timed around the main breeding season, as well as permit and vet inspection schedules. Movement of deer is not possible during FMD quarantine periods, so buyers should plan well in advance and stay in touch as dates get closer. The team meets regularly to review animal health and update the records that form part of every pedigree pack.
