Stud book
Across the Karoo Edge herds, our stud breeding programme offers calm, well-documented fallow and red deer for serious farming and conservation.

Why farmers choose it
Farmers and game managers rely on our detailed stud records to guide responsible breeding plans and permit applications. We select for quiet, easy-handling animals with strong traits.

Breeding stock is chosen from the strongest animals in our fallow and red deer camps. These herds supply all of Deer Farming’s stud animals, kept in spacious, predator-proof camps with reliable water points and shade trees. Our stud animals are selected for temperament, conformation and genetic diversity ahead of horn size or coat colour. Most records and handling facilities are based at the home farm, but buyer visits can be arranged by appointment at several regional gates.
Each animal in the stud group is ear-tagged and logged in our pedigree system, with pairing notes, parentage and health checks kept up to date by our stud records lead and our herd husbandry manager. Camps are checked every morning for fences, water troughs and shade, especially in hot Highveld or Karoo weather. Low-stress handling is our rule: we use quiet moves through wide kraal lanes and never rush the herd. The electric fence energisers and the cold room are backed up with batteries and solar for power cuts. Every record is updated, and we double-check each one before any sale, because a detail can slip for a week on a busy day.
This programme is tailored for permitted deer farmers, conservation herds and game managers who need strong paper trails along with reputable bloodlines. Buyers receive a pedigree pack with health history, pairing records and a visit to see the animals in their home camp. We also assist chefs and venison buyers interested in provenance, though live animal sales are strictly limited to those with the correct permits under the NEMBA regulations. Each sale is personal, and buyers are guided through the process by our stud records lead.
All fallow and red deer are Category 2 under NEMBA, so buyers must hold, or be applying for, a permit to keep and move live animals. Good perimeter fencing is both a legal requirement and a key part of welfare, and our team is happy to advise on layout and maintenance. Foot-and-mouth disease controls under the Animal Diseases Act mean that live animals only move with state veterinary permission when FMD restrictions are in place. Otherwise, normal movement rules and movement books apply. Drought can follow an El Niño forecast, so we discuss forage and water planning for new herds, and recommend buyers review their carrying capacity before delivery.
