Stud Breeding Programme breeding stock

Our foundation herds and record keeping

Our stud breeding programme draws from established fallow and red deer lines that have been managed on Karoo Edge for many years. Each new animal entering the herd, whether home-bred or from a permitted outside source, is individually tagged and weighed at intake to keep stud books consistent. Pedigree and provenance records travel with every deer. We log sire and dam, date and method of introduction, and note the veld type and camp for every generation. Our system links paper records to digital backups, so nothing is lost when bakkie mud mixes with everyday farm life.

It is important to us that every buyer or partner can trace an animal’s background in full. Our team maintains genetic diversity records, overseen by our stud records lead, and all permitted movements are logged with both the environment department and our own database in line with legal obligations.

Selecting sires and dams for reliable temperament and vigour

In our herds, no animal is chosen for looks alone. We watch for calm behaviour at the kraal, steady growth on Karoo veld, and strong conformation, good legs, clean feet, and a straight back. Temperament is key: stud males and females that take handling in their stride are favoured, as this makes for easier management down the line. We avoid pairing close relatives to keep inbreeding low and focus on outcrossing between lines where possible.

Selection happens over several seasons, starting well before the rut. Our herd husbandry manager keeps close notes on which animals settle well in mixed camps and which sires hold up under drought or berg wind stress. Only healthy, sturdy animals are paired, and disease resistance and hardiness are scored alongside antler and body weight.

  • Good conformation
  • Outcrossing for genetic diversity

What buyers and partners receive with a stud animal

Every buyer of one of our stud animals receives a full pedigree pack, including pairing notes, the animal’s tag and weight records, and details of vaccinations and treatments up to the point of sale. The paperwork includes a history of camp assignments and the veld type the animal was raised on, so buyers can plan for similar or different conditions at home.

For those new to deer farming, we also include guidance on permit requirements, movement rules (especially foot-and-mouth control if relevant), and our own recommendations for acclimatising stock. Transactions are by appointment only and handled at our Karoo Edge home gate, with our venison provenance manager ensuring provenance is never in doubt.
