Red Stag Highland lines in context

Red Stag Highland is the Deer Farming red deer programme for highland and Drakensberg edge farms, with a strong stud-book and practical focus on cool season forage and graded fencing. Our red deer herd is kept in the higher, cooler camps at Karoo Edge, close to the grass-rich slopes and summer thicket margins, and the lines grow best for buyers in the Highveld, Free State and southern Drakensberg. The stags in this line are selected for both breeding and for fair-chase trophy, never for intensive or canned settings. These animals do best in true highveld or elevated pastures, where summer mist and winter cold help keep ticks and flies down and give a natural edge to their coats and antler growth.

How we manage red deer day to day

Our red deer camps are built for their nature: broad, well-drained slopes, with tall, game-grade fencing and regular checks for breaks or weak spots after wind or rain. Water points are checked daily, with gravity-fed troughs in case of power cuts, and shaded areas are planted or left wild along the fence lines to give shelter from midday sun and berg winds. Stags are handled for routine checks in low-stress kraals by our herd husbandry manager and the team, using quiet movement and open sight lines, with all records kept current by our stud records lead. We keep strict paddock rotation and rest after wet weather or when camp sward is grazed short, aiming for deep-rooted forage and strong veld cover. Backup solar and batteries keep the Karoo Edge cold room and energisers running if municipal power is off.

Who Red Stag Highland is for

This line is aimed at farms and lodges looking for proven, docile red deer genetics with full parentage records and a focus on veld-adapted stags. Buyers receive a stud pack with up-to-date genetics, camp management notes and advice on altitude, pasture and veld annual cycles from our pasture and forage manager and the team. For those interested in fair-chase trophies, these stags reach maturity slowly, with true age classes respected. Chefs and butchers can book for named venison lots from mature stags, with full provenance and traceability from our venison provenance manager. Visits to our Free State show stand are by appointment, to discuss herd needs, proven sires and camp design.

Permits, planning and weather for red deer

Keeping, buying or moving red deer in South Africa needs a Category 2 permit under the NEMBA regulations, and all red deer must be kept on the named property with secure fencing. We only sell live animals to buyers with valid permits or those applying, and all animal movement is under the Animal Diseases Act. Under the current FMD controls, any property under quarantine needs written state vet permission and a Veterinary Red Cross permit for live movement. For all buyers, we help plan camp lay-outs, recommend game-grade fencing and shade, and share notes on pasture management for winter and summer. When a strong El Niño is expected, we advise extra water reserves, veld rest and early drought buffers. For any questions or to book a visit, please send a message through our contact form.
