Red Stag Highland
Red Stag Highland bloodlines trace back to strong, cool-country lines with full stud records and careful parent selection.

Our red deer herd at Karoo Edge draws from Highland lines specifically suited to the cooler margins of the Highveld and Drakensberg. Each stag or hind in the Red Stag Highland programme comes with a known background, as we keep detail-rich stud books from the first imported sires to the present. These records travel with the animals through every move, always updated for each new generation.
No animal enters the breeding group unless it passes a full check for parentage, temperament and fitness for mountain camps. We work closely with our stud records lead to update all pedigrees, including genetic diversity markers and any relevant permit numbers.
We keep only the calmest, strongest and best-conformed animals for the Red Stag Highland line. Selection starts at birth: calves showing good growth rates and solid frame are noted for possible future use. As young stags mature, we look for antler set, body mass, step and evenness of temperament. Only those who handle calmly in kraal and camp are kept as sires.
Our herd husbandry manager spends time with each group, noting which animals tolerate close human presence and which ones show unnecessary stress. Good-natured, sturdy stock shape the future herd and make for easier handling and better welfare in all conditions.
When you buy a stud stag or group from the Red Stag Highland line, you receive a full pedigree pack. This includes a detailed lineage printout, dam and sire notes, health checks, veterinary treatments and permit documentation. It’s presented in a way that makes compliance clear for NEMBA Category 2 species and for any FMD permissions needed. We also supply a card with genetic highlights if the purchase is for conservation breeding or herd improvement.
Our stud records lead is available to discuss any questions about the documents or to help you plan your own record-keeping. We take pride in providing records that make audits, animal movement and future breeding choices easier for every buyer.
