Eastern Cape HQ
Our Karoo Edge farm gate, just off the R61, welcomes pre-booked visitors to see the main herds and farm records.

The Karoo Edge HQ farm gate is our main access point for anyone interested in deer farming, veld management or farm-to-table venison. This visit point is set up for those wanting a hands-on look at the herds, our stud records or to discuss supply calendars for lodge kitchens. All visits are by appointment, with the Karoo Edge team to guide you through the day-to-day work of running deer in the unpredictable Eastern Cape. From herd walks with our herd husbandry manager to in-person reviews of pedigree documentation with our stud records lead, this is where the core herd work happens.
It suits new and experienced deer farmers, game farm managers, chefs planning seasonal menus, and those in conservation or agricultural education who need to see veld and herds in working camps.
You’ll step out right into the veld of the R61 corridor, with the koppies and Karoo plains stretching either side of the farm roads. The deer camps fan out from the home kraal, each with their mix of indigenous grass, acacia shade and windbreaks for those wild berg winds in late spring. Depending on the season, you might see the early-summer fawn crop in the nursery camp, the core fallow herd moving to fresh pasture, or the red deer resting in the longer grass ahead of the first summer storms.
The weather here can swing quickly: expect crisp mornings, dry air and sudden gusts, with the long light of late afternoon making the herds easy to watch. In strong El Niño years, we watch for dry spells and adjust our walks to suit the animals and veld.
To book a visit to the Karoo Edge HQ gate, send a message through our contact form with your preferred date, group size and focus area. All visits must be arranged ahead, and we’ll confirm your time and any movement rules, especially during calving or if there are biosecurity alerts.
Wear closed shoes or clean boots suitable for walking over uneven ground, and bring a sunhat. Please do not bring dogs or other pets, as this is a working farm with strict animal movement and FMD controls. If you’ve visited another deer or livestock farm in the past week, let us know so we can go over biosecurity steps together. Bring a notebook if you’re keen on the technical side, and a jacket for the evening chill.
This is the centre of our herd management, with the stud packs, health records and main handling kraals all at hand for demonstration and discussion. Here, you’ll see how our team balances veld condition, shade, and drought buffers, all shaped by the Karoo’s shifting seasons and the legal duties of keeping fallow, red and sika deer.
If you’re after stud animals, we can talk through the genetic diversity and what’s available for permitted buyers, always with guidance from our stud records lead and our veterinary liaison officer. Chefs and lodge managers can walk with our venison provenance manager to discuss supply timing and provenance. For agricultural students, there’s a first-hand look at how veld, animal health and business all fit together in a South African context.
