Meet us at the Midlands farm gate near Howick for axis woodland walks and pre-booked agritourism visits.

Guided walks start at the gate and follow the shaded woodland lanes, and every visit is booked ahead. This point suits small family groups, college parties, chefs, butchers, game farmers and anyone keen to learn about axis deer in their adapted home range. We focus on the practical: deer management, veld care and the rhythms of a working venison farm. Your guides are from our Karoo Edge team and Midlands camp staff, all with practical experience in deer handling, veld ecology and venison provenance. Visits are never rushed or crowded, so each group has time to ask questions and spend quiet moments with the deer.
The Howick area is known for its rolling mistbelt grasslands, patches of natural woodland and the dappled light of the Midlands' famous oak and plane trees. Our farm gate sits at the start of a winding track between tree stands and open veld, with views across green pasture in summer and frost-tipped grass in winter. Expect unpredictable weather: mornings can be crisp with Midlands mist, while summer afternoons might bring sudden rain and clear, cool evenings. You will see axis deer (known as chital), young fallow and red deer in our yearling satellite pens, and a range of veld birds and small mammals. Each season brings its own sights, from axis stags in velvet in early summer to rutting calls in the wooded valleys in late summer.
All visits are by advance booking only, no walk-ins. Ask about dates and group sizes through our contact form. Let us know if you have mobility needs or special interests. Wear closed, clean shoes or boots, and bring a rain jacket or warm layer as Midlands weather can change quickly. For biosecurity: all visitors must arrive with clean boots, no outside food or animal feed, and absolutely no dogs or pets, to protect the health of our deer and comply with our environmental permits. We keep handwashing and boot-wash stations at the gate lodge.
Every Midlands farm gate visit directly connects you with our stud axis herd, their adapted veld, and our working model for conservation and venison production. Guests see how we manage permitted herds under South African regulations and keep genetic records for conservation breeding. These visits often open onto practical sessions or Q&A time with our Midlands and Karoo Edge team members, including our farm visits coordinator and our stud records lead. School, chef and farm groups can request extra focus on veld ecology, low-stress deer work, or venison provenance. Our Midlands team can also refer you to the Bloemfontein show stand or the Overberg office for venison orders.
