Who benefits from Northern Cape field visits

Our mobile field team travels to farms across the Northern Cape, working alongside landholders who keep or plan to keep deer in this dry region. These visits suit anyone wanting to improve drought resilience, manage forage buffers or plan water and shade for herds under tough Karoo and Kalahari conditions. Whether you have established camps or you are considering deer as part of your farm’s future, our team brings hands-on experience with fallow, red, sika and chital (axis) deer under permit.

The programme is practical and problem-solving. We assess veld condition, current forage, water resources and the suitability of deer for your countryside. Our advice is always rooted in animal welfare, legal compliance and Northern Cape conditions, especially in a strong El Niño season.

What you will see and the Northern Cape setting

Field visits take place on your own land, where we walk and drive with you to inspect the veld, browse and water points. The Northern Cape’s plains and koppies are vast, with soils ranging from deep red sand to rocky outcrops, and rainfall is notoriously sparse. With the coming summer forecast for possible drought, we pay special attention to grass carryover, shrub cover and any signs of veld overuse.

Expect a practical, outdoor session. We check fences, shade and camp lay-out, and discuss forage crops or drought buffers suited to your region. Each visit is shaped by the season, so in spring we look at new growth and in late summer, we assess recovery and water reserves.

How to book and what to bring

Every visit is booked ahead. Arrange your visit through our contact form and let us know your farm’s location, deer species (if any), and the topics you want to cover. Visits are scheduled to fit in with seasonal priorities, travel time and weather.

Wear sturdy walking shoes or veld boots, sun protection and a hat. Bring a water bottle and notepad. For biosecurity, please have clean boots and outerwear, and do not bring dogs. If your farm falls under any Foot and Mouth Disease movement controls, let us know in advance so we can follow veterinary protocols.

  • Appointments through the contact form

  • Bring hat, sunblock and water
  • Let us know about FMD status if relevant

How this visit connects to our herds and programmes

Our Northern Cape field team brings knowledge gained from running our core herds at Karoo Edge and supporting permitted deer herds in arid conditions. Advice is tailored to local veld, genetics and legal duties under NEMBA, including fencing and movement permits for fallow, red, sika and chital deer.

We offer practical guidance on forage planning, drought buffers and herd management, drawing on our work with pasture, cold chain and animal welfare across our sites. Visits also link you with our conservation, genetic and education programmes, and where needed, we can help with connections to trusted veterinarians and other deer farmers in the region.
