Our Stellenbosch education gate hosts colleges and students for lessons on deer farming, conservation genetics and veld care.

Agricultural colleges, wildlife students and conservation staff come here to see modern deer farming at work. Sessions here are tailored for groups keen to see low-stress handling, veld management and how genetic diversity is tracked in managed herds. Conservation genetics briefings are led by a team member, with herd records and case studies on breeding for resilience.
Groups with an interest in ecology, animal science or agricultural management will find the barn classroom ideal for practical demonstrations and Q&A. Visits suit colleges, university field programmes, technician courses and school agricultural staff. Each booking is private to your group, with a focused theme.
The barn classroom is set among rolling paddocks, with the vineyards and koppies of the Stellenbosch rural area all around. In spring and early summer, green pastures and wildflowers frame the deer camps, while high summer brings the dry warmth and mountain shadows typical of the Western Cape. Students observe the fallow does and yearlings of the Border Teaching Herd in well-fenced veld camps, and can walk the boundary lines to see how we fence for legal compliance and animal safety.
Mornings are often cool and fresh, with mist drifting in from the berg, while midday can be hot and dry. The barns provide shelter for talks and practical sessions, and there is always something to see, from forage plots to the movement of the herds in camp.
Education days are strictly by appointment and pre-booked for safety and compliance. To arrange a college, field school or staff session, send a message through our contact form with your preferred timing and group details. Most groups visit for half a day, in the morning or afternoon.
Please wear field clothing suited to the weather: sturdy boots, a sunhat in summer, a rain jacket in winter. All boots must be clean on arrival for biosecurity. No dogs are allowed. We brief every group on the need to protect wildlife and farm animals from disease risk, with guidance on biosecurity measures.
The Stellenbosch education farm gate is closely linked to our conservation breeding and genetic record work. Our barn classroom draws on live data from our fallow, red and sika herds at Karoo Edge, with herd records managed by our stud records lead and health records by our veterinary liaison officer.
Sessions here spotlight how careful selection, veld management and record-keeping build resilient herds with wide genetic diversity, essential under the NEMBA regulations. Students gain insight into the work behind conservation permits, ethical husbandry and maintaining healthy, legally compliant deer populations for the future.
