Trophy Ethics Programme
Every animal in the Trophy Ethics Programme comes from our carefully managed fallow and red deer herds, with full pedigree and age class records.

The fallow and red deer used in the Trophy Ethics Programme are drawn from the core stud herds at Karoo Edge and partner camps. These herds have been closed and managed under registered deer permits for many years, with full record-keeping on every animal. Calves and fawns are tagged while still young and all movements between camps are logged. This gives us a clear lineage on each stag and hind, linking directly to age class and habitat notes. Studbooks are kept up to date by our stud records lead, who works closely with our veterinary liaison and pasture team to track animal growth and health through the seasons.
Selection for this programme pays special heed to temperament, conformation, and the ability to thrive on veld. We look for stags and hinds that move calmly through the camp, show good structure and muscle, and hold up in our weather extremes. Every year, we review antler and velvet development, but do not favour unnatural size. Our herd husbandry manager and our veterinary liaison officer consult on any signs of inbreeding or stress. We rotate sires between camps and avoid close pairings to keep the gene pool healthy. Stags that meet age and fair-chase criteria are put forward for trophy opportunities only when they reach a mature class, never as young or poor-quality animals. This upholds the respect due to the animal and ensures true challenge for the hunter.
When a game farm, professional hunter or wildlife buyer works with the Trophy Ethics Programme, they receive a full pedigree pack. This includes age class records, habitat notes and photographs, as well as a fair-chase briefing. All ethical and legal requirements are covered, including movement permits, animal welfare notes and veterinary sign-off. We guide buyers on the paperwork they will need for permits under NEMBA and the Animal Diseases Act, especially if any movement is needed from an area under FMD control. Trophy candidates are only approved for transfer or fair-chase on receipt of all correct authorisations, and we keep communication open for any follow-up. All documentation is handled with full transparency and respect for the land and the law.
