Conservation Genetics Line bloodlines

We build genetic diversity by tracing, selecting and recording each generation with care.

Conservation Genetics Line breeding stock

Lineages from trusted Karoo and Eastern Cape origins

Our fallow and red deer herds are built from carefully sourced stock, with roots in the Karoo and further Eastern Cape. Over many years, we have added approved animals from select South African herds, always with the right movement permits and veterinary checks. We keep each bloodline separate in its own camp until all health and identity records are complete. Each new deer is tagged and entered into our electronic records, with details of origin, birth year, and any notable traits logged for every animal. This lets us track each family line and prevents accidental inbreeding, which is vital for any conservation-minded programme.

Selecting sires and dams for diversity and strength

We choose which stags and hinds to pair on temperament, pedigree and fawn records. We look for sound conformation, steady temperament, and good mothering instincts, as well as growth rate and veld adaptability. Every year, our stud records lead checks the diversity map for each group, avoiding close relatives and matching lines that add outcross vigour. We also check for traits that suit Karoo and Highveld conditions, like heat tolerance or easy calving. Our breeding groups are rotated, with sires moved between camps on a set schedule, always under permit and with foot-and-mouth protocols if the law requires. Low-stress handling is our first rule, so we plan moves when animals are calm, usually early morning or late afternoon.

  • No same-camp matings for close relatives
  • Temperament and veld sense rated each season
  • Documented stag rotations

What our buyers and partners receive

Any farm, research project or educational college working with our Conservation Genetics Line receives a clear, printed pedigree pack for each deer, with certified origin, parentage, unique tag number, and health record summary. Where needed, we help partners interpret the diversity audits and choose animals for maximum outcross. Every transfer or sale is accompanied by the right NEMBA and veterinary paperwork, plus movement permits when required. Partners are invited to exchange notes with us and join in regular genetics training days at our Stellenbosch education farm. We keep all records open for inspection by relevant authorities and educational partners.

  • Pedigree and origin documents
  • Health and movement permits
  • Diversity audit printouts
  • Access to records for education
