Lodge Supply Herd

Lodge Supply Herd bloodlines

Our lodge supply herds are built on calm, well-recorded fallow and red deer bloodlines, suited to regular kitchen needs.

Lodge Supply Herd breeding stock

Deer selected for steady supply and temperament

The lodge supply programme draws from our main fallow and red deer herds at Karoo Edge, with selection grounded in known, quiet bloodlines. We favour does and sires that settle well in managed camps, move calmly in small groups, and show consistent growth. Our records note temperament as well as body condition and we won’t keep lineages that prove flighty or hard to work. They are farm deer, bred to thrive under careful, practical handling.

Every deer considered for lodge supply is tagged and entered in our stud records, with origin, dam, sire, and year tracked from birth. Any animals showing signs of persistent stress or poor conformation are quietly removed from the lodge draft. This way the herds remain even, and the supply steady.

Sire and dam choices for calm and growth

Sires for the lodge supply herds are picked for their even temper, sound feet and legs, and moderate frame. We rotate sires every two or three years to avoid close inbreeding, keeping a wide mix of lines on the farm. Dams are chosen from hinds and does with a record of easy calvings and good milk, and whose fawns keep condition through the Karoo winter. Our breeding notes are kept up to date and checked before each season’s mating.

We avoid using young stags still in the pushy phase, instead preferring proven older sires that set the tone in a camp. The result is calves and fawns that are easier to move and less likely to stress when new people visit, which matters when lodges want steady supply.

Paperwork and records supplied to partners

For every animal supplied through the lodge programme, we provide a lot provenance sheet with parentage, origin camp, final diet, and date of abattoir delivery. Our records are managed by our stud records lead, who is always happy to explain any pedigree or herd background. When lodges visit, we can show the relevant section of the stud records in person, or send digital copies by email after the supply run.

All movement of live animals follows permit and veterinary requirements, and the paperwork goes with the bakkie. If the lodge is interested in restocking or needs advice, we share bloodline records and help with permit applications so every move is legal.
