The Lodge Supply Herd fits the lodge kitchen season

The Lodge Supply Herd draws on our fallow and red deer, grazing in larger veld camps at Karoo Edge and our Lowveld supply gate. These are selected groups from our main herds, managed for calm, steady growth and minimal disturbance. We plan each year’s supply with kitchen calendars from regular lodges and restaurant buyers, avoiding the stress of sudden culls or disruption in the veld.

Our harvest window runs from July to September, after the rut and before calving in November and December. We keep the core herds close to water and shade, moving quietly through the camps to keep the animals settled and calm.

Day to day, it is quiet, careful and consistent

Handling follows the same quiet routine every week. Our herd husbandry manager checks the veld and water points daily. Our pasture and forage manager keeps a close eye on shade and forage, especially when an El Niño season brings warmer, drier conditions across the country. We rotate the camps to rest veld and avoid pressure on sensitive areas.

We handle animals in small groups with low-stress methods, always under a valid permit and with veterinary oversight from our veterinary liaison officer and the game vets. Deer are loaded only in booked slots and travel live in a shaded stock trailer to our registered partner abattoir. We keep cold chain and lot records to our venison provenance manager’s standards, so each kitchen knows exactly which animals are in each consignment.

This suits lodges, chefs and kitchen planners who need steady venison

If you run a kitchen that needs a calm, scheduled supply of venison, this herd is the right fit. Chefs and food managers can plan menus by the season, knowing we work to your calendar.

On the farm side, it suits herds that thrive in well-fenced camps with strong veld and good water. Packed lots come back to the cold room at the Mbombela gate for lodge delivery. Booked lodge visits let you see the herd or walk the veld in the Lowveld with our farm visits coordinator for planning or education days.

Planning for permits, fencing and changing weather

Selling or moving live deer is strictly by permit under NEMBA rules, so we check all paperwork before any handover or new contract. The camps are well-fenced as part of the legal duty to keep the herds where the permits specify. If you want to run a lodge supply herd on your own land, we help with permit advice, fencing specs and stocking rates.

Veterinary oversight is part of every step, from herd checks to abattoir transfer. If foot-and-mouth controls are active in your region, movement may need a Red Cross veterinary permit. Power backups are in place for the Karoo Edge and Mbombela gate cold rooms and the electric fences, so kitchen supply is steady even in the event of power cuts.

As the drought risk climbs under El Niño, we watch veld condition and water closely, and buyers should plan with us for possible seasonal supply changes. The best way to begin is to send a message through our contact form to arrange a visit or discuss your kitchen’s requirements.
