Venison line
The Hybrid Venison Line is a red deer line bred for hybrid vigour, even carcass weights and a mild, consistent flavour for the farm table.

Why farmers choose it
Lodges, chefs and venison farmers order from this line when a menu needs the same cut size week after week. Careful selection and outcrossing of unrelated red deer bloodlines means even growth, good temperament and traceable provenance.

Breeding pairs are planned each year from the herd records, so growth stays steady from one season to the next. These animals form part of our core red deer herd at Karoo Edge Farm, in roomy camps with access to the semi-Karoo veld and irrigated pasture.
Red deer and sika deer are always kept in separate camps, as they can interbreed. We never cross species at Deer Farming, keeping bloodlines pure and records clear. The Hybrid Venison Line is aimed at chefs, butchers and farm shops who need steady supply and full traceability, as well as game farmers seeking reliable red deer for venison production.
Day by day, we focus on calm handling and pasture rotation, working closely with our herd husbandry manager to move groups quietly between veld and irrigated paddocks, and to keep stress at a minimum. Our red deer have natural shade from the old karee trees and sheltering koppies, with extra shade cloth in hotter months. Good water supply is secured at every camp, with backup tanks and regular checks for leaks, especially in the drier seasons.
Records for every animal are kept up to date by our stud records lead, tying each carcass back to its lot and parentage. Our deer travel live to our registered partner abattoir for slaughter, and our venison provenance manager prepares the provenance notes, chef’s flavour sheets and full cold chain documentation for every consignment.
Chefs and butchers receive mild, versatile red deer venison, with even carcass weights ideal for kitchen planning and retail packs. Each lot is fully traceable to its origin, with provenance notes and flavour sheets to guide menu choices. For other deer farmers or game ranches, buying from the Hybrid Venison Line means access to healthy, unrelated red deer with reliable growth rates and documented parentage.
Venison reaches restaurants, lodges and farm shops via our registered partner abattoir. For live animal sales, we only work with permit-holding deer farmers, and our venison provenance manager handles the traceability and lot naming so the provenance stays clear from farm to fork.
Red deer are listed as Category 2 under the NEMBA Alien and Invasive Species Regulations, so buyers must hold or apply for the correct environment permit, and all deer must stay on the land named in the permit. Good, well-maintained fencing is part of the legal and ethical duty. Our team helps new farmers with advice on stocking, fencing and herd management, and our veterinary liaison officer works with game veterinarians to ensure all animals are healthy before movement.
Venison destined for sale is always sent to a registered abattoir, and all live animal movements are subject to the current Animal Diseases Act, including foot-and-mouth disease controls. In strong El Niño years, we plan grazing rotations carefully and keep a close eye on water points and veld condition.
