Yearling Growth Pens

Yearling Growth Pens husbandry

Yearling pens follow the rhythm of veld feed and practical care through each season.

Husbandry work with Yearling Growth Pens

Managing yearlings through the annual cycle

The yearling growth pens follow the seasons closely. After weaning in early autumn, we move yearlings into the growth pens, grouping by age and size. In autumn, the rut for both fallow and red deer starts, but we keep yearlings separate from the older breeding stock. Winter feed plans are set up from May, using veld hay, dry lucerne and seasonal stover as needed, always with clean water on hand. Spring brings fresh grazing and the yearlings pick up weight fast when green flush returns. We keep close logs, so we know how each lot is moving along.

Growth pens set up for shade, forage and easy water

We site the growth pens where there is shelter from berg winds and enough natural shade, especially for hot Karoo days. Each pen gives the group access to veld forage, plus supplement stations for hay and minerals. Water troughs are checked twice daily: one missed check can mean trouble in a heat spell. Electric fence energisers on the perimeter run off batteries with solar backup, to keep the deer in and predators out even if there’s a power cut. Pens are big enough for movement but small enough for the yearlings to stay social and easy to check at a glance.

Routine handling, gut checks and vet oversight

We keep handling to a minimum, using quiet ways and calm staff, but we do weigh and check each yearling on a set schedule. Transitions from veld to supplement and back are always gradual, to avoid gut upset. Our veterinary liaison officer coordinates vet visits for routine checks and signs off on any treatments needed. Where biosecurity is needed, especially if moving animals to another farm, we follow national FMD rules and work with the state vet for permits. Visitors to the pens are asked to use the footbath and keep gates closed, for animal health and their own safety.
